This historical masterpiece is based on the French book by Victor Hugo of the same name (L'Homme qui rit in French). Victor Hugo also wrote the books of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862). This film was directed by the German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni and features Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine "The Clown". Mary Philbin (Who was famously in The Phantom Of The Opera (1925)" plays the blind Dea. The film is known for the grotesque grin on the character Gwynplaine's face, which often leads it to be classified as a horror film. Because of this movie's infamous grin the world was introduced to The Joker in the Comics, in many ways if it wasn't for this movie, we may have never seen one of the greatest comic book villains of all time. Jack Pierce the man who made the creepy make-up in this classic went on to make the iconic make-up effects for future Universal Classic Monsters such as Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), The Mummy (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and The Wolf Man (1941). ---------------------------------- Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for fair use for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. The Man Who Laughs (Dir: Paul Leni, 1928) A Victor Hugo novel adaptation that inspired the appearance of Batman's Joker. A transgressive blend of Gothic Romance and Horror that critiques aristocratic prejudice, showing virtue of a man with a disfigured permanent smile. youtu.be/21szw8qzA4w?...
