Jimmy Carter Understood Palestine

Should we mourn any presidents? If there’s any that makes the case to do so…it might be Jimmy Carter. The former president was laid to rest this week in a big show of bipartisan respectability, with all living presidents and vice presidents attending his funeral. While some argue that Carter was basically the blueprint for the modern neoliberal Democrat, there was one issue where he outshone any other president in recent memory: Palestine. When it was released, his book, “Peace not Apartheid,” was criticized by just about every U.S. government official. By calling Israel an apartheid state and calling for peace, Carter committed a cardinal sin of honestly discussing the unequal system the state has created for Palestinians. The nerve of that guy! All in all, Carter’s legacy is something of a mixed bag. Like every president, he supported dictators, anti-democratic coups and mass slaughter by pro-American regimes. There are, however, more redeemable parts of his legacy, which is a unique feat among American presidents in the post WW2 era. How do you think Carter should be remembered?
