First Russian Soldier On Trial For Executing Ukrainian POW | RFE/RL Exclusive
The first ever Ukraine war crime trial is underway. Russian soldier Dmitry Kurashov, who was recruited from prison, is accused of executing a surrendered Ukrainian soldier and prisoner of war. This marks the first time a Russian soldier has been physically present in a Ukrainian courtroom for such charges. Kurashov was part of Storm-V, a Russian military unit composed entirely prison recruits, some serving long sentences for violent crimes. They were offered a chance at freedom in exchange for fighting in Ukraine. Kurashov is accused of executing Ukrainian soldier Vitaliy Hodnyuk after he had surrendered after a battle in the Zaporizhzhya region. The Russian troops were taken prisoner themselves afterwards, and Kurashov’s fellow soldiers are testifying against him as prisoners of war in Ukraine. According to the testimonies, killing POWs was standard practice, as they had been ordered not to take prisoners, allegedly by high-ranking Russian commanders. Ukrainian authorities believe this is part of a deliberate Russian military strategy rather than isolated war crimes.
