"It is by will alone I set my mind in motion" - Piter De Vries

[Disclaimer: I own no rights to the content in this video clip. I, as a humble fan, have simply highlighted this clip I love from one of my favourite films. I hope the powers that be do not take offence.] Mentat, Piter De Vries, in service to House Harkonnen, has been summoned by his master Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. On the journey Piter repeats the Mentat mantra: "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains. The stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion." This role in David Lynch's version of Dune (1984) was my first encounter with Brad Dourif - the actor playing Piter De Vries - and it certainly was an excellent one. Dourif went on to play the role of Raymond in Lynch's BLUE VELVET (1986) though will be familiar to many in roles such as Grima Wormtongue in Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002) or Doc Cochran in cult TV show DEADWOOD (2004-2006). This particular piece from Piter has always stuck in my head and so, I present it to you ;-)

  • It’s my understanding that Brad Dourif came up with that, I don’t think it’s in the book. youtu.be/EMBb_tPPA8E?... Sapho is a juice made from the roots of a plant on Ecaz, consumed by Mentats to stimulate thought. Like RedBull or whatever young ppl drink now, I’ve no idea and don’t drink those.
