Three years after Russia launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine, the fate of this beleaguered country remains uncertain. It is difficult to overstate the fundamental consequences of the outcome of the largest armed conflict in Europe since the Second World War. The physical future, political freedom and economic well being of the Ukrainian people are at stake, as well as the existence, sovereignty and integrity of the state. The effects of this uncertainty at the European level could blunt or sharpen Russia's efforts to achieve its broader goal of reversing the strategic effects of the nineteen ninety one dissolution of the Soviet Union and recreating the modern day Russian empire by limiting the sovereignty of states east of the Oder Neisse line. This was the explicit objective of the draft treaties Russia presented to the United States and NATO in December two thousand twenty one, ahead of the February two thousand twenty two invasion. To expand Russia's borders again. The European Union is aware of this and has increasingly sided with Ukraine against these threatening Russian plans. The European Union has officially put the whole world on alert to support Ukraine. But for the European Union itself, military support alone was not enough. Significant efforts were also needed to bring such actions under a single umbrella and implement them faster and more effectively. A large number of European Union members, including the United Kingdom, took action to provide faster military assistance to Ukraine, to improve diplomacy with the United States, and to make the right and timely moves, such as economic restrictions, to persuade Russia. Most recently, it was revealed that the European Union will form a coalition of twenty countries to support Ukraine. Following the extraordinary European Council on Ukraine and defense, the leaders of the European institutions Antonio Costa, Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas met with the leaders of the United Kingdom, Turkey, Canada, Norway and Iceland to assess the situation. The five countries outside the European Union are also critical. These are not randomly selected countries. Turkey in particular stands out here. It is normal for Turkey to take a strong role in the coalition when considered in the context of NATO. However, the situation here is not limited to NATO. The issue is the general defense needs of Europe and the European Union. But Turkey is not in the European Union. It is now three years since the full scale invasion of Ukraine and it is still unclear whether the war will end. At this point, leading figures in Europe and NATO are saying, It is close to impossible without Turkey. Why. Let us take a look together. Now we will take a closer look at this critical move by the European Union. We will look at what impact this coalition will have on ending the war between Ukraine and Russia, and what other activities the European Union will undertake in addition to this step.
