The bird wrasse (Gomphosus varius), like all other wrasses, starts its adult life as a female... then it changes into a male. Typically, the largest female in a given territory will change into a male in response to the loss or demise of the territory's dominant male. The colour markings of the male and the female are very different. This video uses the morphing video technique to show the colour change; in reality, though, the change takes days.
