Terry Fox is a Canadian hero. On April 12, 1980 he left St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador and set out to run across the country, all the way to the Pacific Ocean. He stopped on September 1, 1980 near Thunder Bay, Ontario, when his cancer returned to his lungs. Terry ran 5,373 kilometres, raised nearly $2 million for cancer research, and united the country around his Marathon of Hope. His legacy lives on through the Terry Fox Foundation, the annual Terry Fox run, and the millions of people who are still inspired by his determination. And soon, Terry’s legacy will be in the hands of every Canadian — on our new $5 bill.
