Haydn wrote his Paris symphonies (Nos. 82-87) for the Paris Concerts de la Loge Olympique. Its first violins alone were double the size of Haydn's entire Esterháza orchestra of maybe 25 musicians. However, he undoubtedly tested them out at home first. They still sound fine on such a small ensemble.
