Ergo Proxy is a cyberpunk anime from 2006, incorporating many surreal and experimental elements into it's story. The anime follows Re-l Mayer, an investigator in the domed city Romdeau who's work leads her to encounter a Proxy, seeming monsters who begin to run rampant in the city. This intertwines her path with Vincent Law, a mysterious immigrant seeking to become a "true citizen," and Pino, an AutoReiv infected with the Cogito Virus, which grants these machines a soul, or the ability to act of their own free will. Together, they uncover the dark secrets of their society and its past, exploring the true nature of the Proxies and the human race alike. Similar to Psycho-Pass, the series is a future cyberpunk-esc dystopia evolved from our own, with a story incorporating many philosophical questions and refences. Much like Serial Experiments Lain, the story can become hard to follow in it's surreal and abstract moments, but it creates some of the most engaging scenes in this. Vincent Law's story is similar to Vash the Stampede's from Trigun, and a few of the societal and human aspects used in Shinsekai Yori (From the New World) can be found here too. While the 22 episode animation may be quite divisive among fans due to it's confusing nature, it raises many interesting philosophical questions, as well as pondering things such as "the sins of mankind," and producing one of the greatest flips on the man versus god trope which I've ever seen.
