First staged by Orson Welles and John Houseman in 1937, Marc Blitzstein's anti-capitalist music-drama is curiously ill-situated amidst the red plush and gilt of the refurbished Old Vic Theatre. Despite, or perhaps because of, the knowledge that nothing has changed for the better, the revival by the Acting Company from the States feels very much a period piece. Indeed Mr. Houseman, who directs once again, assures us that the current production is closely tailored to the style of the original, controversial run. - The Guardian Newspaper
