Instagram has come under fire for blocking LGBTQ hashtags, including #gay, #lesbian, #queer, and #bisexual, from teen accounts. Meta, Instagram's parent company, claims the issue was caused by a coding mistake. However, critics argue it reflects deeper systemic bias. The block prevents teens from accessing supportive LGBTQ content, including advice and role models - something crucial for navigating identity. Advocates question whether this “error” was a preemptive policy aligned with conservative political shifts. This news along with the recent controversy, where Meta announced new hate speech policies, is adding fuel to the sentiments against the social media giant. The new hate speech policies have allowed derogatory comments about women and LGBTQ individuals across Facebook and Instagram. The new policies also affect the business community being able to talk to Meta users. Sponsored ads at Facebook and IG have completely removed key word embracement for LGBTQ, black and other marginalized communities. For example, you could have a sponsored message in Facebook that would show the ads to users that like other LGBTQ programs like RuPaul’s Drag Race. All of those associations have been removed. Activists report that hashtag blocks have continued after the “coding mistake” statement. As Meta grapples with backlash, many in the LGBTQ community view these changes as a step backward in creating safe, inclusive spaces for young people online. The use of Hashtags that reflect identity, gender and orientation will likely continue to be managed by Meta platforms.
