It took less than two months for Fox News to finally give up and stop pretending that Donald Trump was going to “save” the economy, and they are now openly admitting on air that things are starting to get really bad. But don’t worry – they aren’t explicitly blaming Trump for any of this just yet, as they still maintain that this is somehow President Biden’s fault. But that lie can only continue for so long before no one buys it anymore. Everyone has their limits, right? There is only so much that any given person can take on any given issue. And on the issue of the economy, it appears that Fox News has already hit their limit. According to a wonderful new piece by Greg Sergeant over at the New Republic, multiple hosts on Fox News are no longer shying away from talking about the fact that yes, the economy right now is going down the toilet with Donald Trump as president. However, before I get into what these Fox hosts are saying, it is important to point out as Sergeant does, even though these Fox News analysts are admitting that the economy is getting really, really bad, none of them so far have been willing to admit that it is Donald Trump's fault. And in fact, they are all still blaming it on President Biden, right? This is somehow the holdover from him. Even though everything was going fine, until Donald Trump started enacting his policies, this is still Biden's fault and that is the talking point they're going with. And I will get more to that in just a moment. But here is what Sergeant had to say. Um, Maria Barta Romo whose specialty is reporting on Wall Street excitedly complaining on Friday morning saying the job's picture's weakening. You have Fox's Charles Payne Glumly reporting. I think the boom times are over. And he said it's uh, implicitly admitting that the economy under Trump's predecessor was a lot better. But then Sergeant continues. A big part of the dynamic here is surely that Fox News is at its core, allied with the corporate plutocratic wing of the GOP tariffs are such an obvious affront to those interests that Fox figures will struggle to sugarcoat them. This is why you see the Wall Street Journal editorial board brutally attacking the tariffs and it's y you see Bart Romo practically pleading with Trump to reassure the plutocrats about them. She's basically channeling those interests. Perceptions of Trump's economic prowess are the scaffolding that holds up the rest of the edifice. If the public continues to sour on his economic performance, the deep cuts to government will look less about efficiency and instead appear maliciously dangerously incompetent. Trump's celebrations of his own impunity won't come across as the mere rhetorical trash talking of the strong man who was needed to whip the economy into line. Instead, they'll sound like what they truly are. The rantings of a genuine want to be dictator. Now, I agree with every single word that Sergeant says right there. Like he absolutely nails it on the head. The big problem of course, as I mentioned, is that you have this entire network that understands that Trump is the one tanking the economy. They know that they are not that dumb. They know Trump's policies did these things, but they can't tell that narrative. They can't tell that part of the story. They can only talk about the first half, which is all the numbers are getting bad. So for the second half, everybody, you gotta blame somebody, right? Instead of blaming the guy who did it, they blame President Biden. And the issue with that is not only that it's not true, but it's that millions of people across the country will hear that and automatically believe it. Like they won't question it for a second. They won't even look at the dates on the calendar to figure out if that's even possible. They hear it from Fox and they'll just believe it. So the lie does work and that's the worst part of it. But there is a silver lining 'cause there's only so long that that lie is gonna work.
