Russia is now facing a major civil war! A senior Chechen rebel leader has said that ethnic groups within the Russian military are in danger of escalating into "open conflict." The Russian military heavily recruits from ethnic minorities, who make up about 20 percent of the country's population. During the war with Ukraine, there have been persistent reports of growing resentment among soldiers from Russia's indigenous republics, with many complaining of discrimination by Russian commanders. In the latest incident, the Ukrainian partisan group Atesh reported "serious ethnic clashes" among soldiers in Russia's 70th Motorized Rifle Regiment. The unit operates in the Zaporozhye region and is staffed by Caucasian nationals. Atesh said the regiment had received a lot of "verbal abuse based on nationality." and physical violence. Ruslan Kutaev said that since the outbreak of full-scale war, problems of "ethnic disharmony" have emerged in Putin's army. Kutaev continued: As the persecution of Muslims in Russia intensifies, hostile relations between Russians and Muslims on the front lines, especially on the front lines, are increasing. There are cases of confrontation and alienation. As the war continues, this could lead to a direct conflict within the Russian army. Kutaev is a veteran Chechen politician who served as a minister under Chechnya's President Dzhokar Dudayev and then as deputy prime minister under his successor Aslan Maskhadov after the country declared independence from Russia in the early 1990s. He currently heads the Caucasus National Assembly, which aims to create an independent state that includes all the nations in the region. Russian politicians have been actively fueling open hostility towards ethnic minorities serving in Putin’s army. The head of the Just Russia political party, Sergey Mironov, has previously criticized the Kremlin’s immigration policy, suggesting that non-Russians are unfit to serve in the country’s army. Russia is home to around 190 ethnic groups, making it one of the most diverse countries in the world. According to regional activists, the initial mobilization campaigns for the war in Ukraine disproportionately targeted ethnic minorities.
