The Engels-2 airfield has again been attacked by Ukrainian drones, recently. Apart from the airbase itself, there are several other important and interesting targets for the Defence Forces near Engels. By reaching ‘Engels-2’, Ukraine can destroy not only the aviation, but also some of the enemy's strategic reserves. Roman Svitan, a military expert, flight instructor and colonel of the AFU in reserve, said more about it in a military bulletin for Channel 24. The Engels-2 airfield in Saratov region is about 600 kilometres from the border with Ukraine. The Russians store strategic aviation there, particularly the Tu-160 and Tu-95. There is also a special engineering service there that handles the Kh-101, Kh-555, and Kh-55 missiles. Russia has also transferred tactical aviation to this airfield, in particular Su-34, Su-35, Su-24. ‘Engels is located on the left bank of the Volga River, as well as the Engels-2 airfield. There is a serious storage facility for aviation paraffin under the aerodrome - if you get to it, half of Engels will simply blow up in the air and the Volga will change its course,’ explained the flight instructor. Moreover, a military unit, which is one of the depots of nuclear tactical weapons - Saratov-63 - is located south of Engels. This could also be an important target for the Defence Forces. Right now, strikes targeting Engels or Saratov are only possible with Ukrainian-made drones, because Western missiles, which are in service in Ukraine, cannot reach there. Engels Air Base, located in Saratov Oblast, has been a key target for Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on Feb. 24, 2024. The airbase is one of the main facilities the Russian military uses to launch missile strikes on Ukrainian territory. On Dec. 5, 2022, explosions rocked Engels Air Base, damaging two Tu-95MS strategic bombers. Satellite images released the following day showed one of the bombers with firefighting foam spilled beneath it. According to Defence Express, this marked the first loss of such an aircraft in combat conditions. Later, Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate stated that the Engels Air Base was attacked with Tu-141 Strizh drones, packed with explosives. On the night of Dec. 25-26, 2022, two more explosions occurred at Engels Air Base. Former Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat stated that the incident was a result of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine. Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported three deaths and four injuries. On Dec. 29, 2022, more explosions took place at the base, triggering Russia’s air defense systems. On Mar. 20, 2024, an NV source in Ukraine’s special services revealed that Ukraine’s HUR had conducted a drone attack on the town of Engels, which lies near the airbase.
