Sailors knocked overboard rescued from Puget Sound

Two sailors were rescued from the frigid waters of Puget Sound on Saturday after they were thrown off a sailboat just north of Edmonds during the Possession Point Race. Brent Campbell and Sheridan Ferguson were knocked overboard when a wind gust hit the boat they were on. Brent and Sheridan were headed to the bow of the boat to get ready to change sails when they were thrown off the vessel. “And at that time, we got a big gust of wind, and the bow plowed into the back of the wave and it just kept going,” Brent said. “Sheridan and I kind of got just swept out of the boat. It was like, you know, the boat was just overcome with water and one instant we're on the boat, one instant we're off.” Someone on the boat hit the man overboard module, which launched a Dan Buoy – which is a bright, floating buoy used to make the spot of a person overboard. Video taken from aboard a Washington state ferry by Troy Hutt and shared with KOMO News shows crews rushing to rescue the two sailors as they clung to the buoy. Hutt said the waves were not only big, about five to six feet, but they were also very close together. Brent said the sheriff’s boat was there in about 20 minutes and he was very grateful that the ferry stood off about 100 yards, working to break the wind from the rescue operation. When the two were rescued, passengers on the ferry could be heard cheering.
