British Prime Minister Keir Starmer returns to the House of Commons to brief MPs on his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump and yesterday's defense summit in London. Starmer announces £1.6bn package for Ukraine for air missiles .On top of the £2.2bn loan announced yesterday, Starmer now adds another £1.6bn in UK export finance allowing Ukraine “to buy more than 5,000 air defence missiles, which will be made in Belfast, creating jobs in our brilliant defence sector”. “This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure now and strengthen Ukraine in securing the peace when it comes because we have to learn from the mistakes of the past. We cannot accept a weak deal like Minsk, which Russia can breach with ease,” he says. Sir Keir Starmer has told European leaders they must step up at a "once in a generation moment", as efforts continue to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. European leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have arrived for crunch talks in central London on the war in Ukraine. The prime minister delivered the message to fellow leaders at a summit he is hosting at Lancaster House in London, close to Buckingham Palace. The aim of the gathering is to try and come up with a common position on ending the three-year conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion. Starmer is expected to urge the 18 leaders in attendance to follow the UK in boosting defence spending.
