Buckingham Palace should put on a “champagne reception” for Prince Harry, following his sizeable legal settlement with the publishers of The Sun, veteran royal observer Tina Brown says. Brown, a former editor of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker, told Andrew Marr that Prince Harry’s efforts in pursuing legal proceedings at great personal cost should be celebrated by ‘the firm’. “Honestly Buckingham Palace should be giving him a champagne reception, because the fact is that they all hate the press and they've all been tortured by the tabloids,” Ms Brown said. “Look at how Camilla was utterly tortured for all of those early years. “So they ought to actually be sort of breaking out the champagne and saying, ‘Well, Harry, you did it for all of us’.” On Wednesday, Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers (NGN) — which publishes The Sun — agreed to pay substantial damages and apologise to Prince Harry over sustained and illegal intrusions into his life. They also apologised for their treatment of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. Prince Harry has always maintained that he was the victim of phone hacking, claims which were validated in court today after NGN admitted to “incidents of unlawful activity” between 1996 and 2011. It’s estimated the damages and legal fees to be paid to the Prince will be above £10 million pounds. Brown added that Harry should be “admired” for his attempts to correct the historical record. “He’s put himself, and everybody in the family through hell in a way, but on behalf of something righteous, frankly,” Ms Brown said. “He was trying to sort of reclaim his childhood, and the peace of mind of his mother.” Listen to the full show on Global Player: https://app.af.globalplayer.com/Br0x/LBCYouTubeListenLive #andrewmarr #princeharry #diana #ukpolitics #rupertmurdoch #LBC #dianaprincessofwales LBC is the home of live debate around news and current affairs in the UK.
