History Proves You Can't Negotiate with Evil & Win - So Why Are These Democrats Working With Trump?

Today’s Republican Party is fully in the service of the fossil fuel industry, for-profit health insurance, rightwing billionaires, and the military-industrial complex. A few Democrats apparently think they can “compromise” with these proudly in the service of evil people. It’s a terrible mistake. and history proves it. The Republican Party exemplifies this avoidance, as it now fully serves the fossil fuel industry—an industry knowingly destroying our planet, while paying people to deny it or obscure the truth. The party is also aligned with the for-profit health insurance industry. According to The Lancet, 65,000 Americans die unnecessarily each year because insurance companies deny them care. The Republican Party serves right-wing billionaires who appear committed to replacing American democracy with oligarchy. As I have shared many times, I wrote a book on this subject: The Hidden History of American Oligarchy. Oligarchy is a transitional form of government. When oligarchs take control, the system becomes a kleptocracy. The people eventually revolt, leading to one of two outcomes: either a return to democracy or a descent into tyranny. In the United States, we’ve seen democracy prevail several times: during the Civil War, in the Progressive Era under Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, and after the Great Depression, with Franklin Roosevelt. However, when oligarchy persists unchecked, tyranny often follows. The Republican Party is fully beholden to the American gun industry, which is psychologically scarring an entire generation of children. My grandchild participates in active shooter drills, where schools simulate attacks. This creates unnecessary trauma, all to protect the profits of the gun industry. The Republican Party not only supports this, but enthusiastically endorses it. How can we not call that evil? The party also supports movements to privatize public schools and keep college unaffordable. They align with investment firms that are financializing housing, causing a homelessness crisis. When my father bought the house I grew up in during the 1950s, the average home cost about twice the annual salary of a middle-class worker. My father earned around $7,500 a year, and our house cost $13,000. Today, the average annual salary is about $40,000, while the average home costs $440,000—ten times the annual salary. The Republican Party not only allows this but collaborates with the industries causing the problem. Additionally, the banking industry, which crashed the economy during the George W. Bush administration, went unpunished. Bush ensured no one was held accountable, and even Obama shares some responsibility for not prosecuting those responsible. Many of these bankers walked away with millions—or even billions—in bonuses, and the Republican Party remains aligned with them. Now, some Democrats believe they can compromise with these forces. Take the Lake and Riley Act, for example. Michelle Goldberg of The New York Times recently wrote about it. The bill uses phrases like “victims of the Biden administration’s open border policy” to justify extreme measures. Under this law, a child of undocumented immigrants accused of a petty crime, such as stealing a candy bar, could face lifelong detention without due process. This is a gross suspension of constitutional rights, including the Fifth and Sixth Amendments. Yet, some Democrats, like John Fetterman and Ruben Gallego, have co-sponsored the legislation. Others in the Senate have signaled support.
