“To hear it said in court, and for it to now be public, open knowledge that the UK government admits there is a clear risk that the F-35 might be misused, I think is really significant.” In November, the UK government openly admitted in the High Court that there was a clear risk that F-35 fighter jets might be used in violations of international law after a case was brought by human rights groups. Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq and the UK-based Global Legal Action Network filed a legal challenge to the UK government’s continued arms sales to Israel as it continues its military assault in Gaza. Middle East Eye sat down with Anna Stavrianakis, an arms trade researcher and professor of international relations at the University of Sussex, shortly after the last hearing about the case and discussed the wider context of the politics and power dynamics around arms regulation.
