Hippopotamus jaw biomechanics | The science of wide gapes

Ahoy there skullywags! In this episode, we break down the biomechanics of a wide gape, and reveal how the hippopotamus can have both huge masseter muscles AND a huge gape! A similar anatomy can be seen in other wide-gaped animals like peccaries, but not nearly as derived as the hippo. We look at other animals too, including the sabertooth cat, Smilodon fatalis.
