Professor Noam Chomsky illustrates how the doctrine of American exceptionalism intimidates other nations into submitting to the United States' foreign policy, no matter how illegal or oppressive it may be. Sanctions are one example; for instance, Sweden is not allowed to sell certain products acquired from Cuba because of US-imposed sanctions. Even international treaties are skewed in the United States' favor. For example, Iran acquiesced to a 2015 nuclear disarmament negotiation with the United States; Iran followed its terms, and, sure enough, the United States broke it. The official reason behind the US intervention in Cuba in the 1960s was the latter's defiance of the Monroe Doctrine: a written declaration of American exceptionalism in the Western hemisphere.
