What you are seeing here is a clip from the 1984 American rock musical drama film Purple Rain, directed by Albert Magnoli, but that is not what you are hearing. What you are hearing is the single of the song. I have replaced the audio track from the film with the single. This track is said to be written and produced by Prince and the Revolution, although it is now claimed by some to have been written and produced by Prince alone. It is a recording of a live performance in the same venue as shown in this clip – First Avenue in Minneapolis – but has the sound of the audience excluded from the mix and has some overdubs added to it. For the film, the band did not play the song live; they mimed to the completed track. What you are hearing in this video is the same track that the band were miming to, and when you watch the film, what you are hearing is what it sounded like in the venue as they were miming to this track, with the sound of the audience very audible throughout. The track presented here – i.e. the single – is not the full-length version of the track used in the film; it has had the last 43 seconds removed, and so too has the album version. The full-length track that the band mimed to is unreleased. Also, the track they mimed to is slightly faster in tempo than this one. Replacing the original audio track from the film with this one involved slowing down the film clip. The only difference between the single and the album version of the song is that the endings are slightly different, and the album version is actually shorter in length by 6 seconds. The reason for this is that the album version segues into the next track – Baby I'm A Star – in the same way that the film version does this. The single has been given an ending that sounds like a proper ending when the track is played on its own. The source I used for the footage is a DVD of the film that I bought several years ago. Incidentally, YouTube will not allow me to publish any clip from this film which includes any audio from it. The original audio track has to be removed or else it gets blocked in all territories by Warner Bros. Films. Furthermore, I have been allowed to use footage of some songs but not footage of others. For my unofficial music video for the song which immediately follows this one in the film, Baby I'm A Star, see here: https://youtu.be/TWRK_asWR5k For more information on this song and track, see these pages: https://princevault.com/index.php?title=I_Would_Die_4_U https://www.discogs.com/Prince-And-The-Revolution-I-Would-Die-4-U/master/16090 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Would_Die_4_U For my presentation of the lyrics to this song, I have used two sources as a guide. The first is a picture of Prince's own hand-written lyrics, which can be seen here: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/b3/77/7e/b3777e6bca798768ac8e19ec7ca33e40.jpg The second is the CD booklet for the 2017 reissue of the 1984 album "Purple Rain", a picture of which can be seen here: https://www.discogs.com/release/10475521-Prince-And-The-Revolution-Purple-Rain/image/SW1hZ2U6NDMyNDUzMDk=
