This morning scientists and engineers from JPL & NASA presented their investigation into the crash of Ingenuity, the Mars Helicopter which had pushed the limits of technology over its 3 year career. The root cause was the navigation system became unable to track features over the bland terrain where the accident happened leading to a loss of control. The full investigation will be published next month but you can watch the presentation from the AGU Meeting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p45y3ea9vHY Follow me on Twitter for more updates: https://twitter.com/DJSnM I have a discord server where I regularly turn up: https://discord.gg/zStmKbM If you really like what I do you can support me directly through Patreon https://www.patreon.com/scottmanley
Over the years, NASA has made significant contributions to road safety. The crash of the the Mars Ingenuity Helicopter will provide another one. It crashed because it lost its orientation using its navigation camera. In other words, cameras are insufficient for autonomous navigation.
youtu.be/yNDfMzskI_0?... Great video by Scott Manley. I always anthropomorphize space rovers and in this case I feel so bad for the little helicopter. It did so well! Designed for “up to” 5 flights over 30 days and it gave us 72 flights over 3 YEARS! Well done to the team at NASA!

It's always the way, isn't it? - you never actually get to see the last few log messages, the ones with the definitive explanation of the crash. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNDfMzskI_0
