The Baltic Sea is seen as one of Russia's central bases for threatening the Western flank. NATO has tried to expand its membership in order to thwart this Russian objective. Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO is, we believe, among the most tangible proofs of this. --- But despite such moves, Russia has never given up on the Baltics. Russia is bordered by the city of Saint Petersburg and in winter it is possible to walk and even drive on the freezing sea. But the Moscow regime has always demanded more. That is why Kremlin leader Vladimr Putin has lived out his dreams of building an entirely Russian shadow empire in the Baltics beyond St Petersburg. --- In this strategic area between Denmark and Sweden, with the Kattegat Channel and its three inlets connected to the North Sea, the Russian side has done everything it can to build its naval power and intimidate NATO. The average depth of the Baltic Sea varies between 65 meters and 550 meters. The deepest is west of Gotland at 550 meters. In order to fulfill its self-determined objective, Russia wanted to be able to build a playground in this geostrategic sea and focused on global underwater cables. --- The underwater cables were one of the most critical issues for Russia to put the West at risk. But the NATO wing was aware of this and was taking steps to monitor all Russian activities in the Baltics. It is as if the international military alliance has sensed that it has recently launched a deep security operation against Russia in the Baltics. ---
