As Adolf Hitler established his dictatorship across Germany, he imposed a bloody and brutal purge onto a group which over the years had greatly supported him. The SA (Sturmabteilung) were also known as Hitler's Brownshirts, and their numbers were huge as the Nazis seized power. Their numbers rose to around 3 million which was 30 times the size of the army, and many believed they would form a new peoples army. However the SA were incredible loyal to Ernst Rohm, their leader. Because of this, Hitler feared a revolution where Rohm would overthrow him using the SA and to prevent this he ordered a purge of the SA's hierarchy. This was a brutal purge in which dozens and even hundreds of the groups members were executed by firing squads and by other means. This event became known as the 'Night of the Long Knives,' and over a series of days, bloody killings took place. Hitler also used it as an excuse to execute his former political enemies. Following the executions, the SA were not longer a threat to Hitler. However he had also ordered the execution of one of his closest friends Ernst Rohm. The event despite being extremely brutal, saw Hitler tighten his stranglehold over Germany. Thanks for watching! Support the channel by subscribing, liking, and sharing. Hitler killed homosexual german officers in the Night of Long Knives. The opening night of violence in 1934. Some in the party were bothered by the fact that Rรถhm was homosexual. Homosexuality was illegal. ***triple check youtube videos, lean towards older documentaries***
