The headline over at the Washington Post right now notes that several thousand immigrants have been using the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) app. This app, in place for a couple of years, allows individuals to apply for asylum. Applicants stay in Mexico, and the app creates an appointment for them to appear at a later date. When the appointment is available, the individual shows the app to CBP officials at the border, crosses into the U.S., and attends their appointment at the appropriate facility to have their claim reviewed. Many of these immigrants, including young families, women, and children, have been waiting in Mexico for six months or longer. Recently, the app notified all users that their appointments have been canceled and that no further immigration via the southern border will be permitted. The new policy has effectively begun, although Trump has not yet signed any executive actions, and the specifics of his plans remain unclear. Trump has promised to reinstate Title 42, an obscure public health law that allows the president to close the border during a public health emergency. Previously, Trump invoked this law during the COVID-19 pandemic to restrict border crossings. He has indicated that he will again cite public health concerns—targeting immigrants from south of the border—to justify border closures. Mass deportations have also been promised, along with efforts to end birthright citizenship. This proposal has raised significant questions, particularly given its constitutional implications. For instance, Vivek Ramaswamy, whose parents were not U.S. citizens when he was born, benefited from birthright citizenship. How this policy would play out, especially under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court, remains to be seen. Trump has reiterated his commitment to building more of the border wall. During his first term, only 40 miles of wall were constructed. Additionally, he has proposed federalizing local law enforcement and imposing tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China on his first day in office. The proposed TikTok ban appears to be postponed, despite the law allowing delays only when a purchaser is finalizing a transfer. Trump has indicated he will bypass the law entirely, likely triggering lawsuits. In his inaugural speech, Trump reiterated his "drill, baby, drill" agenda. Notably, he did not place his hand on a Bible during the swearing-in ceremony. His energy policies likely include overturning Biden’s bans on offshore drilling in the Atlantic and Pacific and opening wildlife refuges in Alaska and elsewhere for drilling. Despite this, there is currently no oil shortage, and gas prices remain relatively low, partly due to the growing popularity of electric vehicles. Trump also plans to eliminate emission reduction mandates for auto manufacturers. These mandates require manufacturers to cut emissions in half by 2027, primarily achieved through the sale of electric cars or more fuel-efficient vehicles. Trump intends to lift the ban on exporting natural gas to support the fracking industry. He has also announced plans to "stop transgender lunacy," a phrase causing significant concern among the transgender community, though the specifics of the policy remain unclear. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in the federal government are also targeted for immediate termination. Trump plans to require federal employees, including those in the Social Security Administration, to return to in-office work.
