The Doctor sets off to visit the city, taking Vicki with him. In their absence, Ian and Barbara are kidnapped by slave traders. Mistaken for the famous lyre player Maximus Pettulian, the Doctor is taken to perform for Emperor Nero. Ian becomes a galley slave, and Barbara is sold to Nero's slave buyer at an auction in Rome. Ian escapes from the galley when it is wrecked in a storm and makes his way to Rome to try to rescue Barbara and reunite with the Doctor and Vicki.
