1962 HITS ARCHIVE: You Are My Sunshine - Ray Charles (#1 R&B hit)

You Are My Sunshine (Davis-Mitchell) by Ray Charles with The Raelets & Margie Hendrix, arranged & conducted by Gerald Wilson, produced by Sid Feller Ray’s third consecutive top-10 pop hit of 1962 was this lead track and first single release from the LP “Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music, Volume Two,” follow-up to his influential best-seller “Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music,” which produced the also-posted “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “You Don’t Know Me.” This Billboard #1 R&B and #7 ‘pop’ single is a soulful big-band-backed performance of the country-pop standard composed (possibly) by Oliver Hood in the 1930s but credited to singer-politician Jimmie Davis and his collaborator Charles Mitchell after Davis purchased the song and rights.
